AI Automation ROI Calculator
Calculate the financial return on integrating AI tools and automation scripts into your NetOps and infrastructure workflows.
Investment Metrics
Cost of development, software, or script creation.
Recurring costs for OpenAI tokens, Ansible licensing, etc.
Time saved by replacing manual engineering tasks.
Financial Impact Analysis
How It Works
This calculator values saved engineering time at an hourly rate, subtracts recurring costs and compares the result with implementation cost. Saved capacity is not automatically a cash saving: staff may use that time for other work.
Automation Use Cases
Network Provisioning
Calculate the financial return of implementing zero-touch provisioning for edge switches across multiple branch locations compared to dispatching field technicians.
L1 Support Triage
Measure the ROI of using AI-driven chatbots to automatically resolve tier-1 password resets and basic connectivity tickets.
Automated Auditing
Justify the budget for a script that automatically audits firewall rules and access control lists (ACLs) every night, saving hours of manual review.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good payback period for IT automation?
There is no universal acceptable payback period. Compare the estimate with project risk, adoption, ongoing review work and your organization’s investment requirements.
Does this account for software licensing?
You should include any recurring API costs or software licenses (like Ansible Automation Platform or OpenAI API tokens) in the ongoing operational costs section to get an accurate net ROI.
Example: a recurring configuration check
Suppose implementation costs $3,500, the workflow saves 20 hours per month valued at $45 per hour, and maintenance costs $50 per month. Gross monthly value is $900; net monthly value is $850. Annual net value before the initial investment is $10,200. Payback is $3,500 ÷ $850 = 4.1 months, and first-year ROI is ($10,200 − $3,500) ÷ $3,500 × 100 = 191.4%.
Test a conservative scenario
If only 10 hours are saved, monthly net value falls to $400, annual value to $4,800 and payback rises to 8.8 months. Measure saved time in a pilot and subtract time spent reviewing output, handling failures and maintaining the automation before entering the hours.
Read the outputs correctly
Annual savings exclude the one-time implementation cost; first-year ROI includes it. With no upfront cost, percentage ROI is undefined and is displayed as N/A. If recurring costs meet or exceed the time value, there is no positive monthly benefit to recover an upfront investment.
The model assumes constant monthly benefits and costs. It excludes taxes, financing, discounting, adoption delays and unquantified service improvements. It is a scenario comparison, not a forecast or a guarantee of savings.
